Hello everyone,

On behalf of the projecteducate we'd like to apologies for being fairly quiet these past few months. Many of us have gotten far busier than we anticipated, and we were also responding to a general slowness in interest and response from the community as of late. However, we anticipate things are about to pick up, so we'd like to check in with you about the future of projecteducate.

In 2017, nothing is changing, we will be keeping the same action plan we announced in early 2016, but we would definitely like to pick up our activity again, to have more weeks and weekends organized as soon as possible.

Running a week or a weekend of content at projecteducate does take a decent amount of teamwork. One of the aims of PE is for community members to work closely with community volunteers, therefore, we cannot do anything without YOU! ;) Your help is vital to the functioning of this group. We need community members to volunteer to help run weeks or weekends at PE.

Therefore, we'd like you to tell us what kind of weeks you'd like to see happen, and which ones you would like to help organize with us! We want to hear any idea you might have, and help you come up with a great way to contribute to projecteducate! Please leave a comment or send us a note with any ideas, proposals or questions you might have!

:star: Is all of this confusing and overwhelming? You can find a detailed explanation on how to help organize a week, in this journal: Project Educate: Open Positions - Apply Now! But as a quick reminder, some weeks we've had in the past were about the digital art, traditional art, photography, literature, and any other art galleries on DA, but also things like art in the professions, DA related weeks, chats and forums weeks, art history weeks, etc. A weekend, would basically be a condensed version of a week, where you organize a maximum of 4 articles to be posted from Saturday to Sunday on a scheduled weekend of your choice.

So basically, we need you, so let your opinion and thoughts be heard, and get in touch with us! Again, all questions are welcome for us to help clarify anything you might be confused about!

Dear members,

We'd love to hear some feedback from you regarding the future of our contests here at CRPhotography. What we had been doing for a while, is that each month has a specific theme, the theme being one of the photog galleries on DA (i.e architecture or still life), and the contest would thus simply be to submit something newly created within that photography gallery. However, we have noticed lowered participation lately. So we have a few questions:

1) Have you been participating in these contests? If no, why?

2) Do you think continuing contests based on our monthly themes would be good? If no, why?

3) Would you rather we do contests on different themes? If so, what kind of themes?

4) What type of prizes really motivate you to participate in photography contests?

5) Is 1 month enough for you to produce an image for a contest?

6) Should we be promoting our contests more? Do you perhaps not realize we have contests every month?

We'd really love to get some responses on these questions from you!

Also, if you'd be interested in joining the team as an admin in charge of our contests, please shoot me a note so we can discuss the idea!

Last year the CR team started a project called 'My Daily Deviation Highlights' wherein we invited everyone to browse the Daily Deviations page and collect some of their favourite pieces of art within a journal titled "My Daily Deviation Highlights"! The aim of this project has been to help spread awareness and love for Daily Deviations and our fellow deviant artists!

We've decided to do a "special edition" of sorts where we feature our favorite DDs from the entire year of 2016!

If you see this journal, consider yourself tagged! Go make a feature of your favorite DDs from 2015!

Enjoy!

WHY?

Three winners will be chose and will be awarded core memberships or points as prizes!

So join us to have some laughs and compete for the win! It gets pretty intense and ridiculous.

Holidays Photography Contest!

Thu Dec 15, 2016, 9:09 AM
Dear members,

We are pleased to announce our special Holidays photography contest to you. This year, we're doing things a bit different than what we usually do - we're giving you the possibility to choose between 3 different prompts to participate in this contest. And we're also offering some special holiday themed prizes!

Prompts:

1) Create a holiday themed Still Life photograph. Food, drinks, dolls, Christmas ornaments, toys, whatever you want as long as it belongs to the Still Life gallery and depicts a Holiday that occurs in December or January. Examples:

christmas time...02 by impatienss Holiday eggs by LilyBrilliant
Danbo's First Christmas by Lady-Tori From the series Christmas dessert by Daykiney

2) Show us your New Year's Resolution: Pick a new year's resolution for yourself, take a photograph that represents it, and include a description in your photo's description explaining what the resolution is and how the photograph depicts it. (bonus points if your description is particularly well written or creative)

3) "A Dark Christmas": Create a macabre, spooky or horror-themed depiction of traditional festive themes. Think outside the box, get creative with unconventional depictions of holiday times.

Rules:

  • You may only submit ONE entry to this contest that follows ONE of the prompts explained above. You CANNOT try to do all prompts at once, or none at all, you must clearly pick one prompt.

  • The description to your deviation must include the title of the prompt you chose, and specify that your deviation is an entry for CRPhotography's Holidays Contest.

  • Your photograph must have been taken and posted onto DA AFTER this journal has been posted. If you can include exif data proving it's a new photograph specially made for this contest, it is very much preferred.

  • Submit your entry to this folder to be considered. It will not automatically get accepted - we will review it to ensure it follows all rules.

Prizes:

1st place: 35$ to spend in the DeviantArt print/gift shop* + 2,000 points

2nd place: 15$ to spend in the DeviantArt print/gift shop* + 3 month core (or the equivalent 1200 points)

3rd place: 3 month core (or the equivalent 1200 points)

*DeviantArt's shop offers not only the ability to buy prints, but also art gifts such as mugs, postcards, fridge magnets, calendars, greeting cards, coasters and mouse pads. These could be perfect little gifts for yourself or a loved one! The amount given as a prize is in dollars, so if you live outside of the USA please convert your currency as necessary.

3 winners will be chosen and featured in a CRPhotography announcement journal, but runner ups from each prompt will also be included!

If you'd like to donate prizes please send us a note!

Deadline:

Any submissions sent to the group after January 20th at 11:59PM Pacific Time will no longer be accepted.

Good luck!

Some of you might remember the last time the CV team ran this project. It was a lot of fun, so here we are back at it again!

Have you ever wished you could schedule DDs? Well, I know you have ;) so this project is sort of a chance to show us what it'd be like if you could!

This December we are encouraging you to feature your fellow deviants with a journal of artworks that you would feature as a Daily Deviation (commonly called "DD") if you could. So let's embrace the Holiday Season and spread some love by joining in and featuring our community!

How does it work?

  • Create and publish a journal feature of images that you would choose for a Daily Deviation Feature from your preferred gallery. (i.e. people and portraits, still life, architecture, etc)
  • When your journal feature is live, link it back to the appropriate Community Volunteer's Community Feature Project Journal in the comments area. (i.e. If you choose to feature people/portraits, still life, urban and rural, and other photographs that General Photography CVs cover, then you would need to link to my journal.)
  • After all of the features have been linked to your Community Volunteer's journal, we will publish a master journal feature of all the community features!

Here's a reminder of all the galleries I cover under General Photography:

Abstract and Surreal, Architecture, Commercial (excluding Fashion), Conceptual, Darkroom, Fireworks, Humorous, Infrared, Other, People & Portraits (Body Art, Classic Portraits, Emotive Portraits, Expressive, Infants and Children, Other, Self-Portraits, Spontaneous Portraits, Weddings), Photojournalism, Still Life, Transportation, and Urban and Rural.

Please only link me to journals pertaining to these galleries/sub galleries :)

Dates and Times

  • Start Date: December 5th, 2016, PST time
  • End Date: December 19th, 2016, PST time  (All features must be linked to your gallery CV's journal by this date.)
  • CV Feature Dates: December 20th - 31st, 2016

We can't wait to see the fantastic art that you find and feature! Enjoy the search!

Hey guys,

As most of you know I've been living in Paris, doing my master's here. Me and a lovely friend of mine (female) are trying to travel around in early of January to one or two European countries nearby (cheap plane tickets) but it'd make it so much easier on us financially if we could have a place to crash! It's just us two, and we're not high maintenance or anything, all we'd need was some blankets and a pillow really, and we can sleep in the same bed/couch/whatever.

Some of the places we were really looking to go to were somewhere in Sweden, maybe Copenhagen, Madrid or Barcelona, Lisbon, Dublin, or hey maybe somewhere else! Basically if you'd be willing to let me and my female friend crash at your place for 2 nights, let me know!

Photography Interview: Darkroom

Mon Nov 21, 2016, 1:57 PM
Learn about Darkroom photography through this interview with the talented cameraflou!

Could you introduce yourself to us? How long have you been involved in Darkroom photography and where did the interest come from?

Hi, I'm Steph aka Cameraflou, born in France moved to Canada, Montréal. I’ve always appreciated photography and honestly, it was before digital photography. I started with an old Nikon F wich I still have ! When I was studying at Cinema School I learned the darkroom process for photography and movies 16,35mm I love old cameras, sometimes I build one like pinhole or wide angle large format.

Do you focus more on traditional darkroom or digital darkroom? Can you briefly explain the differences between the two to our readers?

I work with both analog and digital, I develop my black and white films, print my own photos. I only work with outdated films and chemistry so sometimes the result are not as expected. There are many differences between taditionnal or digital, but I think the most important is time and the magical side of traditionnal darkroom. On one side we deal with algorithms on the other with organic chemistry. With the Digital the result is quick, traditionnal darkroom is like a long process and the result is always a surprise even if you know well the process.

What is the most challenging aspect of darkroom photography in your opinion?

To transcribe what you get in mind ! Sometimes, it's something else that appears on paper...There is something magical about creating something with your eyes and hands from start to finish. It's not like a digital print !
REFK41 by cameraflou  Forlorn.F by cameraflou Didn't know what time it was by cameraflou

How did you learn about darkroom photography? What do you think beginners should focus on learning when they first begin darkroom photography?

Like I said, I learned at school, I work for film industry, perhaps it will help.
But I think that if you look at Master photographers or Master painters like Weston, Adams, Shore, Eggleston, Bresson etc, you learn a lot. Actually, the internet is full of tutorials for learning darkroom...or other alternative digital darkroom like cyanotype. Just developing your own BW film is very easy, I think it's a good start for beginners. Not expensive and fun. Everything is in your hands.

Do you think that there are things you can only achieve with film photography as opposed to digital photography?

Yes !
You can get filters, plugin that attempt to duplicate the “look” of film. I think it's fine for screen, but when you make print it's different.. Grain doesn’t scale at the same rate as the image so if you make a small print the grain is huge and on a large print it almost disappears, besides film grain is random, the pattern is organic and that makes the “look” totally different to any film simulation programs.

Could you pick one of your favorite darkroom photographs from your own gallery and tell us about how you created it?

Snow and Kodak by cameraflou
I like this one ! Because it has been taken by an old old camera with 127 film very very expired 1965, and it was a frozen day. The camera was posed on a car's hood.
I really didn't expect this result, I made a print of the photo on warmtone ilford paper and I gave it to the owner of the shop that you see a little bit on the right of the photo. It's a shop He has framed it and hooked it to his shop. It's a framer.
Now this man is a friend and he does all my picture frames at good price !:) (Smile)

What gear do you recommend for those interested in trying darkroom photography?

A simple film developping tank to begin with BW film... with chemistry. Simple Camera that takes 120 film.
It's the base. If you have the funds and the space build a darkroom.
If you’re lucky you might find someone to teach you, if not there are loads of books and stuff on the Internet. It’s time to take photos. Your best photos. Let go and shoot, shoot, shoot! :) (Smile)

Please take a moment to thank cameraflou for his time!

Welcome!

This month the general photography CVs - overdebatedTanyaSimoneSimpson and myself - set a total of 29 DDs across nearly every gallery we cover! Many thanks to everyone who's suggested to us, and as always we need more suggestions so don't be shy! Our guidelines are linked at the bottom of this article, and we tend to get a lot more People and Portraits suggestions than anything else so bonus points if you send us great pieces from the "weird" galleries. Self-suggestions are always welcome if you have a piece of your own that you think we should see!
